From an administration famous for lying about just about everything, one of the most insane and insulting ones is about NATO and how, in the words of Trump “we are there for them, but they will not be there for us” in some form or another. Finally though, after comments made in the past few days, the UK and other “allies” had enough and pushed back with force.
To start off let’s just remember how absolutely insane even the factual premise of the argument is. Article 5 of NATO says that an attack on one NATO nation is an attack on all of them. Basically what Trump is saying here is that they’re doing all the work for NATO and come to everybody’s aid, but no one will help the US out.
In reality: Article 5 has only been invoked once, after 9/11, when NATO allies immediately came to the United States’ defense. That historical fact alone makes Trump’s claim not just wrong, but insulting to the countries that buried their dead alongside Americans.
But as Trump again made remarks about Afghanistan recently, the world had enough. Talking about Afghanistan specifically, he commented how other nations “send some troops“, but they “stayed a little back, little of the front lines” implying that even IF nations send troops, it was still the US doing the dirty work and risking their lives. A disgusting comment, coming from the guy who dodged the draft himself notably, and understandably not received well among leaders, veterans, armed forces, and the hundreds of families who lost a loved one in Afghanistan.

NATO chief Mark Rutte told Trump in front of cameras he was mistaken. UK PM Keir Starmer called the remarks insulting and appalling. Prince Harry putting out a statement:
“I served there. I made lifelong friends there, and I lost friends there. The United Kingdom alone had 457 service personnel killed. Thousands of lives were changed forever. Mothers and fathers buried sons and daughters. Children were left without a parent. Families are left carrying the cost. Those sacrifices deserve to be spoken about truthfully and with respect, as we all remain united and loyal to the defence of diplomacy and peace.”
And social media filled with outrage over such hurtful and factually false remarks. Will it matter? No idea. Will he apologize? That would be a first, so probably not. But as a general matter of fact it is good to see the rest of the world start to push back on the insanity of Trump, following these remarks and his wish to acquire Greenland.
