So I guess Trump really, really wants Greenland huh? Imposing tarrifs on your allies because they literally will not let you invade and annex one of their territories for your childish world domination fantasies. Amazing grown-up stuff.

At first you might brush his language off as petulant, childish, or just ignorant (and let’s be clear, it is), even though this is his second term in office and we should know better. But things have escalated to the point where EU/NATO member states are sending troops to Greenland. Not to offer any realistic defense in case of a US assault, but to make the choice to do so unthinkable.

I personally don’t think this will escalate to that point, though I have been proven wrong many times before on how far the US is willing to let itself slip towards Idiocracy. In the meantime, we, like Canada, will look elsewhere on things like trade, and keep strengthening our own forces. It will be pretty difficult to see the US as the reliable ally it once was, even after Trump will leave office.

Important footnote by the way: The US has in the past stationed up to 10.000 troops on Greenland for most of the same reasons Trump is citing. The fact that there are just 200 left right now is their own choice. They are pretty much free to do on the island what they want, and have bases established there with Pituffik Space Base.

And of course they fired the head of the base for speaking out when they got her into an impossible situation with their childish rethoric…
